As promised, In this post I’ll be exploring the ways to unlock Neuroplasticity. But first,
What is it and why it matters?
Neuroplasticity is the cool ability of our brains to change and grow. Kind of like how we update software on our phones, we can actually update the neural circuitry inside our brain and change not just our response to any given situation or environment but also how we perceive anything and everything.
We are all Sculptors
Yes!
Every time we learn anything new or change a habit, we are sculpting our brain physically and with that, sculpting our behaviours and sculpting who we are.
Do you remember the last time you learned something new? Let me know in the comments.
It feels weird at first. Like if you prominently write with your right hand and you try to write something with the left, you’ll feel like a toddler again who’s just learning to write.
This experience may seem bizarre, and it is. But when you actually do it, you’ll meet a side of you which may surprise you.
You’ll very quickly notice how we take a lot of what we do for granted. Something as basic as learning to write again, not only gives us the ability to write from both the hands, but it also unlocks a whole new dimension to our writing.
Because, initially, when you can only write really really slowly, the flow of words has to adapt to that. It’s like the tempo has changed and with the tempo, the rhythm, the music, the flow, everything has changed.
Feels like our mind and body are moving at varied speeds? That's neuroplasticity in action. And guess what? doing such activities demand our full attention and concentration and there is a steep learning curve involved. which is the prime condition for hitting what is called as, “Flow State”.
Flow State: The Buzzword
We all have had this experience where we have been so absorbed in doing that we completely forgot about the concept of time? Maybe while painting, writing, or even during a captivating video game session, we forget all our worries and are fully present in the moment. That’s flow state.
But, it’s not just fun; it’s something much more profound. This is our ability to engage in deep meaningful work and create at unparalleled rates. Cal Newport talks about the concept of deep work, it’s a state of concentrated fascination where we are fully immersed in the work.
"Flow is the state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience itself is so enjoyable that people will do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it." — Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
Deep Work
I try to create an environment where I turn off all my notifications, tell my cats not to disturb me, make myself a coffee, close the door of my room with a “Do Not Disturb” sign and just get down to writing. It is tough at first, but eventually the world fades away, and all that remains is the work.
Blocking out distractions and bringing our attention to the task at hand for prolonged periods of time is the ultimate key to produce quality work at unprecedented rates. Something, which we have been working on for months could get closed in a few hours. This is the secret sauce to a more meaningful and impactful relationship with the work that we do.
Building a System to Unlock Peak Performance
To truly harness the power of neuroplasticity and flow, it’s essential to build a system that supports and enhances these states. Here’s how you can do it:
Set Clear Goals and Intentions: Begin by setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals. Having a clear direction helps focus your efforts and provides a sense of purpose.
Create a Distraction-Free Environment: Designate a workspace free from interruptions. Use tools like noise-canceling headphones, productivity apps, or simply a “Do Not Disturb” sign. Let others know your work hours and request minimal interruptions.
Establish Routines and Rituals: Consistent routines signal to your brain that it’s time to focus. Whether it’s a morning meditation, a specific playlist, or a cup of coffee, find what works for you and make it a habit.
Balance Challenge and Skill: Engage in tasks that are neither too easy nor too difficult. This balance keeps you engaged and prevents boredom or anxiety, both of which can disrupt flow.
Embrace the Learning Curve: Understand that initial discomfort is a part of growth. When trying new things, be patient with yourself and trust the process. Over time, your brain will adapt, and tasks will become easier.
By systematically applying these strategies, you can create an environment that fosters neuroplasticity and flow. This system not only enhances your ability to perform deep work but also unlocks your true potential, allowing you to operate at your peak and achieve remarkable results.
So, what do you think? Ready to try some brain exercises and see what changes you can make? Maybe pick up a new hobby or revisit an old one. Who knows what new connections you'll create in that brilliant brain of yours!
I would love to hear what you think or if you’ve got any brain-busting stories to share!
Cheers to making each day a little smarter. I’ll see you in the next post, till then keep shining!
